Measuring levels in cargo tanks – taking measurement technology straight to the flange Using the smallest radar sensor for level measurement in the world, a complete cargo measuring system can be mounted on a flange – the so-called OCS flange. The new sensor generation plics® from VEGA Grieshaber KG and the maritime know-how of Orion Tankmess System & Service GmbH enabled the development of this measuring flange. With it, all sensors can be centrally mounted on a single ANSI 12" flange. The advantage of this development is simple planning and mounting by the shipyard. To allow the crew to carry out additional quick checks of the alarm system as well as measured values, a UTI socket is additionally mounted on the flange. The first ships to be equipped with this new measuring technology are the chemicals and oil tankers M/T “Huntestern” and M/T “Geestestern” built by the shipping company RIGEL in China. The OCS flange is one of the most modern tank measurement and level control systems: radar sensors VEGAPULS 63 with encapsulated antenna systems guarantee reliable level measurement. Thanks to the front-flush antenna, cleaning can be carried out quickly and easily. Pressure transmitters VEGABAR 52 with especially rugged ceramic measuring cells measure tank and pipeline pressure. Wear-free vibrating level switches VEGASWING 63 with no moving parts operate as sensors for high and overfill alarm. The OCS flange provides simple and dependable measurement of tank content and reduces installation costs for the shipyard and service costs for the shipping company.
